First 10 Minutes

Have you read First 10 Minutes: A Classroom Morning Routine that Reaches and Teaches the Whole Child by Steve Reifman?

First 10 Minutes

This is a good short read if you are interested in starting your class’ morning off on the best foot. Reifman talks about the three parts of his morning routine.

  1. Sharing of how each students’ day is going
  2. Quote of the Day/Tower
  3. Exercise and stretches

(I could possibly have these in the wrong order…I left my book at home…where there is no internet…)

I have been using this with my students for the past three weeks and love the exercise/stretch part of the morning. It wakes students up and at the same time calms them down! Its neat how they do both tasks with just four simple motions.

The Quote of the Day and Tower are neat because they are a time to talk about character traits and also the school wide behavior management plan. I plan on not doing the Tower next year, but focusing on a different part of the Canes CODE each week. This will reinforce our Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) throughout the school year.

Check out this super short book and consider some of Steve Reifman’s other books while your at it!
